Naples Art Institute Presents Rembrandt: Masterpieces in Black and White, the Exhibition’s Final U.S. Stop
Featuring etchings from the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam, the exhibition opens October 10
NAPLES, FL (September 30, 2026)—Naples Art Institute is pleased to announce Rembrandt: Masterpieces in Black and White—Prints from the Rembrandt House Museum, on view October 10, 2026, through January 24, 2027. As the final U.S. venue for this internationally touring exhibition, Naples Art Institute offers American audiences their last opportunity to experience this collection of works by one of history’s most celebrated artists before the exhibition concludes its American tour.
Organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam, the exhibition brings together a selection of etchings that demonstrate Rembrandt’s extraordinary achievements as a printmaker, his innovative techniques, and his ability to capture the complexity of human experience.
While best known for his paintings, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669) was also a pioneering printmaker who created more than 300 etchings during his career. At a time when many artists regarded printmaking primarily as a means of reproducing existing artworks, Rembrandt embraced etching as an independent art form. He continually experimented with the medium, using everything from delicate, spontaneous lines to richly textured compositions and dramatic contrasts of light and shadow. His innovative approach expanded the expressive possibilities of printmaking and established him as one of the most influential printmakers in art history.
Spanning Biblical narratives, portraits, landscapes, scenes of everyday life, and studies of human expression, Rembrandt: Masterpieces in Black and White explores the remarkable range of the artist's work and traces his artistic evolution. Organized into thematic sections, the exhibition examines Rembrandt's mastery of visual storytelling, his bold exploration of light and darkness, and his use of self-portraiture to explore identity and the complexities of aging. From intimate sketches to elaborate compositions, his etchings reveal his remarkable command of line and his ability to convey emotion, character, and drama.
“Bringing an exhibition of this significance to Naples is an important moment for Naples Art Institute and our community,” said Frank Verpoorten, Executive Director and Chief Curator. “Rembrandt was a master of storytelling, and his etchings demonstrate an extraordinary ability to capture the human experience through even the simplest lines. As the final American venue for this exhibition, we are especially pleased to offer our visitors the opportunity to experience these remarkable works from the Rembrandt House Museum here in Southwest Florida.”
Following its international debut at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery in the United Kingdom, the exhibition traveled to the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, South Carolina, and the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati, Ohio. Naples Art Institute is the final stop on its U.S. tour.
Naples Art Institute invites the public to a special Opening Preview on Saturday, October 10, from 9 to 11 a.m., offering an opportunity to be among the first to experience the exhibition.
