Naples Art Institute Brings Matisse to Naples

Exhibition Dates: January 18 – April 13, 2025

Naples, FL – Naples Art Institute is delighted to announce its upcoming exhibition, "Art In Balance: Matisse & His Illustrated Works," showcasing over 140 pieces that highlight Henri Matisse's exceptional talent as a printmaker and his innovative approach to composition, color, and form.

Spanning from the late 1930s through the final years of Matisse's career, this exhibition emphasizes his skill in harmonizing vibrant colors with striking black contrasts—a technique inspired by Odilon Redon’s lithographs. Printmaking was integral to Matisse’s artistic journey, serving as an extension of his drawing practice. Through mediums such as lithographs, pochoirs, and linocuts, Matisse produced over 800 engravings, reflecting his enduring creativity, especially during periods when painting became physically demanding.

“Henri Matisse’s work continues to inspire generations, and Art In Balance captures the essence of his genius,” relates Frank Verpoorten, Executive Director and Chief Curator of Naples Art Institute. “This exhibition invites our visitors to explore Matisse’s lifelong fascination with the interplay of color and form, as well as his profound dialogue between visual and literary arts.”

Art In Balance also delves into Matisse’s engagement with both classical and modern literature, highlighting the influence of the written word on his visual art. Notably, the exhibition explores his collaboration with publisher Tériade, which led to iconic works like the "Jazz" portfolio. Additionally, the exhibition offers insight into Matisse’s deeply spiritual later years, during which he designed the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence, often regarded as his artistic testament.

“Through his creative evolution, Matisse teaches us the importance of adaptability and innovation,” Verpoorten said. “This exhibition is a testament to his unyielding spirit and joie de vivre, even during the most challenging periods of his life.”
