Naples Art Institute Welcomes Tomaso Albertini as Inaugural Artist-in-Residence

Naples, FLOctober 18, 2023 – Naples Art Institute is thrilled to introduce Tomaso Albertini as our inaugural artist-in-residence. Setting an impressive precedent as the first contemporary artist-in-residence program in Southwest Florida, Naples Art Institute proudly offers its members and the broader community an exclusive opportunity to engage with Tomaso Albertini's visionary talent. Albertini's residency is scheduled from October 1, 2023, to May 31, 2024.

Having relocated from Italy to New York City in 2015, Albertini was immediately captivated by the vibrant artistic milieu that defines the city. This environment served as the catalyst for the development of a distinctive style and technique, characterized by the use of cardboard to symbolize the juxtaposition of extreme poverty and opulence. Albertini’s contemporary three-dimensional art seamlessly blends elements of both sculpture and canvas; he sculpts his figures in three dimensions and then paints them as if they were traditional canvases, resulting in a captivating hybrid art form.

Nicole Whalen, Director of Education at Naples Art Institute is an enthusiastic advocate of securing Albertini’s place as Naples Art Institute’s inaugural artist-in-residence, “Tomaso and his work are exemplary in every way. His contemporary style, meticulous approach, and potent visual narrative mesh seamlessly with Naple Art Institute’s progression forward as a contemporary fine arts beacon in our community. We look forward to a year full of expansive creation in all ways. Tomaso's presence is a palpable catalyst, ushering in this invigorating movement.”

Members of Naples Art Institute will have the privilege of accessing Albertini's creative process through various channels, including open studio hours, lectures, classes, and workshops. For guests who have yet to join Naples Art Institute as members, the opportunity to observe Albertini's work will be available from the Betty Ford Plaza.

The general public is invited to meet Tomaso Albertini at a reception on Thursday, November 2 from 6 pm - 8 pm at Naples Art Institute. Attendees can learn more about his work as he showcases a curated selection of works that he has created during his residency at Naples Art Institute. Furthermore, this event offers an exclusive opportunity for attendees to acquire select pieces from his collection.

This exciting collaboration between Naples Art Institute and Tomaso Albertini promises to be a transformative experience for all who appreciate the power of art to inspire, challenge, and illuminate.

About Tomaso Albertini: Tomaso Albertini is an Italian artist who recently relocated to Naples from New York City. He employs a unique style and technique for his portraits through the use of cardboard, a symbol of the consumerist New York. He creates three-dimensional art that allows him to accomplish the figure as if it were a sculpture and then paint on it as if it were a canvas. It is, in fact, a hybrid manifestation.

Albertini has worked with Fat Free Art Gallery and Sotheby's, among other relevant galleries and auction houses, and has been featured in publications including Vice and The Guardian.
