Workshops and Mini Classes

Sheri ChaseThe Naples Art Association at The von Liebig Art Center offers short-term (one- to five-day) workshops led by Master Artists and other experts, who often travel from across the country to present these education programs in their only Southwest Florida stop.

These workshops are a wonderful opportunity to learn a new technique, meet a Master Artist and have fun with other artists, both novice and advanced.

2010-11 WORKSHOPS

 

SESSION 1 - Oct. 18-Nov. 13, 2010

• Jane Mjolsness, Art of Personal Greeting Cards - WK10/11-01
   Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 13-14, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
   $120 for members, $150 for non-members
   Create personal greeting cards for all occasions using your own hand-made paper, illustrations, wire, paint, botanicals and other materials. Bring in or design an image and produce multiple personalized cards just in time for the holidays. All levels.

 

SESSION 2 - Nov. 15-Dec. 18, 2010

• Jane Mjolsness, Creative Christmas Wreath - WK10/11-17
   Monday, Dec. 6, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

   Create your own unique Christmas wreaths using shells, beads, and tropical flowers. We will start with grapevine wreaths, metal forms and foam wreaths to create beautiful handmade additions to your holiday decor. Bring your own objects d'art!

   This fast-moving workshop explores the having
   doing and being of art-making. It takes a group
   of artists who are active, but dissatisfied with their work, to a new level of appreciation of their individual talents, skills and uniqueness. When artists feel their skills are lacking, they doubt their own unique styles, they question the value of their art work or they wonder how to develop their own unique styles- this workshop turns those challenges into triumphs.    This is a raucous romp with watermedia that leads to
  new, free-flowing techniques, richer and more
  expressive  color and a wilding up of the artist’s
  attitudes about what art can look like, what it can say and what it has the potential to become. By combining the new interference, pearlescent and iridescent acrylics and acrylic inks with traditional acrylics, watercolor, gouache and ink on a variety of papers, participants learn exciting new techniques that change forever how they think about watermedia art. Harry Danos   Harry Danos, Fun of Watercolor - WK10/11-08

 As a retired architect, Harry Danos is familiar with the rules of composition, perspective and balance and disciplines consistent with all of the mediums, including pastels, oils and acrylics. Watercolor is different than conventional painting in opaque mediums and as such, is challenging and exciting. Transparency, opacity, mixability and paper are som of the unique considerations peculiar to watercolor. Approaching the process from the point of view of discovery and adventure can be a FUN process, where the discoveries can be used in any medium. This course is geared to the students who wish to enhance their abilities in transparent watercolor and have FUN and joy in the process.

   Learn to take Xerox or digital prints and transfer
   the image to any surface you desire. There will
   be demonstrations, discussions of different methods

   Working in the vivid colors of Naples on archival paper with synthetic qualities provides an exciting addition to watercolors. The opportunity to explore the organic mixtures that happen on this surface will be offered in three different locations with different characteristics. Plan to work flat and bring your imagination.    How do you take your work to the next level? Since
   making art is about making choices, what to
   emphasize, what to leave out and why. We will look extensively at the masters and apply their wisdom to our own work. Our guides will be Degas and Deibenkorn, Picasso and Pissaro, Rembrandt and Rothko, Cassatt and Chagall, along with many others. Morning exercises isolate key principles, followed by afternoon easel time to apply them to your own work. All levels.

Landscape/Seascape - WK10/11-21

   Wed-Fri, Feb. 16-18, 9 a.m.-4 -p.m.
   $350 for members, $380 for non-members
Class will cover the basic principles of oil painting with regard to landscape and seascape painting. Painting out-of-doors, en plein-air will be a major focus of the study after the basics are covered. Discussions and lectures on composition, massing, building form, light and shadow, developing atmospheric distance: and depending on your own style, knowing when a work is finished (learning how to not overwork you painting). Students will work in their own style/technique so that the finished work is their own. Douglas will overview his palette and concepts his work entails. Students will mix paints and learn to mix basic strings of color to help comprehend the preparation/set up to prepare to paint out-of-doors.

   Still Life: Fruit & Floral - WK10/11-15

   Wed-Fri, Feb. 21-23, 9 a.m.-4 -p.m.
   $350 for members, $380 for non-members

   This workshop will cover the basic principles of oil painting with regard to painting still life. Includes discussions and lectures on composition, massing, building form, light and shadow. Students will mix paints and learn to mix basic strings of color to help comprehend the preparations/set-up to paint. All levels.

  

Braun Solar   Lynda Braun, Solar Printing - WK10/11-19
   Thur-Fri, Feb. 24-25, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
   $250 for members, $280 non-members
  
Images can be created from old photos or
   drawings on mylar. Once the plate is
   exposed and developed, students will experiment with the printing of the plates. The image is first reproduced onto transparent film. The film is then exposed onto the light sensitive plate (solar plate) using the sun. Though not as detailed as a photograph or inkject print, it brings a different mood to the image that can be changed with the colors of the ink used. Bring 5"x7" printed transparency prints that are derived from a zerox or inkject printer. Solar plates and chemicals will be supplied.
  A materials fee will be added on to the cost of the workshop. 

 

Phil Schirmer   Phil Schirmer, Painting in Egg Tempera
  WK10/11-16

  Wed-Fri, Mar. 3-5, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
   $250 for members, $280 for non-members
   This workshop will introduce the technique of egg tempera to beginners as well as established artists, including the history of egg tempera and discussion on how to prepare traditional gesso and apply it to panels. In 2009, Schirmer's portrait, 'The Secret Garden' was one of 49 paintings selected by the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery to hang in its triennial show.

  

Lumens   Lynda Braun
   Alternative Print Making - WK10/11-20

   Mon-Tues, Mar. 7-8, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
   $250 for members, $280 non-members
   Cyanotypes, VanDyke prints and Lumens prints.
   Non-photographic photography using the sun for exposure. Unique results every time. (Non toxic) Chemicals provided. With all three methods you have a choice of using photographs that have been printed on transparency film or drawings on the transparency film the size of the finished product,  and any organic material like flowers or object. Bring  a variety and experiment. These processes result wonderful surprises with no exact results. Its all about experimentation and having fun. All chemicals will be provided.  A short list of supplies will be provided soon.  You can even scavenge the grounds and park for material. A materials fee will be added on to the cost of the workshop.
