Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Jack Megela studied criminal justice at Kent State University and became a State Trooper for the Ohio Highway Patrol. Later he would return to Kent State University for a degree in Law Enforcement Administration where he received extensive training in all aspects of photography from camera work to darkroom developing and printing. He then put his new skills to work as a Detective Sergeant for the Canton Sheriffs Department. During his day to day work as a detective he photographed accident scenes and crime scenes of all types including homicides.
After traveling the country by recreational vehicle and visiting all 49 land bound States, Megela and his wife Marianne settled in Naples near the edge of the Faccahatchee Strand and The Big Cypress National Preserve. Megela now spends many hours each week in the Everglades where he directs his photographic experience toward nature. “I look for formations in water and trees and anything depicting real Florida, and I go back many times for perfect light conditions,” he says.
Megela has participated in juried outdoor art festivals and exhibitions at venues throughout the United States. He has received more than thirty awards for his photographs and his work is held in numerous corporate and private collections.
"My greatest challenge is in making good photographic images uniting the schools of impressionism and realism in the tradition of classic painters such as Monet and Renoir and photographic artists such as John Shaw, David Muench and Ansel Adams. To interpret the essence of a scene using the five scenes, transforming it into a two-dimensional presentation, and returning it to the observer as an empathetic experience – allowing them to sense my own experiences during the time of creation. Although some of my work is about locales, for me it is primarily about experiencing and photographing the quiet magnificence of nature." -Jack Megela
