Cuba on My Mind (Watson Gallery)

Cuba is an Island and a fascination. To Americans Cuba brings to mind memories of conflict and conjures up dramatic images of cigar smoking generals, Boulevards lined in brightly colored Spanish colonial buildings, classic American cars, tropical flowers and people rhythmically dancing to Cuban melodies, salsa and merengue.
The arts are flourishing in Cuba. The Cuban National Ballet is world renowned. Visual artists in Havana and all over Cuba are creating compelling contemporary works. Artists are reaching out; carefully exploring ideas and their feelings about the human condition and specifically about life in Revolutionary Cuba.
The exhibition will feature work by Cuban and Cuban-American artists. Cuban culture is very family oriented. Unlike in the United States where we cherish independence, most Cubans live in extended families with more than one generation under the same roof. Although Cuban is a very large Island, it is still an island, an isolated body of land bounded on all sides by water. Political and economic concerns have forced many Cubans to server their family ties and migrate to other parts of the world. Their absence is strongly felt and the void filled with nostalgia.
